The Delphi technique is a widely used and accepted method for gathering data from respondents within their expertise. It is commonly used to help identify issues, set goals and priorities, clarify positions and differences across groups, and identify solutions (Delbecq et al. 1986). The E Delphi allows a large number of participants to anonymously contribute from an infinite geography and for a large group to successfully come to a consensus.

In this study, experts will be asked to identify the most important biodiversity questions that, if answered, will have the greatest impact on the practice of conserving biodiversity in Ontario. The Delphi method will consist of four phases. Through consultation with the “Big Biodiversity Questions” team, a large list of participants has been identified. The first phase will utilize an online survey to gather information about important biodiversity questions from a wide range of individuals involved in biodiversity conservation in Ontario.  This may include biodiversity conservation practitioners, policy-makers, academics, etc.  The second phase will build on the first round of responses and may ask for clarification, level of agreement or request that respondents rank or prioritize items that were submitted in the previous round.  The third phase of the study will take place at the Summit in a ‘think tank’ format and employ a consensus based approach to confirm and refine the information submitted. The final phase will provide all participants with a generalized summary of the response and identify those biodiversity questions that were selected to be the most important. This information will be communicated broadly.
